Beijing Culture Tour: Great Wall & More! (Value)

Value Tour:  USD 99 - 132
Duration: 5 Days(need to book 3 days in advance)
Location: Beijing
Available From:  Dec 31, 2013 to Dec 31, 2014
Themes:  Culture  History

From the modern Tiananmen to extravagant Forbidden City to the stolid, military aspect of the legendary Great Wall, see some of Beijing’s most marvelous sights while understanding the complexity and many faces of Chinese culture.

The iconic Tiananmen Square harbors a plentitude of monuments testifying to China's modern history, yet one has only to cross the Gate of Heavenly Peace to enter the Forbidden City, the world’s largest collection of ancient wooden structures and home to China’s emperors for almost 500 years. Here we see the scale of diversity that defines China, as well as the fluidity between its various histories – contemporary, communist, imperial and ancient.

The most popular section of the Great Wall, Badaling dates back to Ming era. The surrounding steep verdant hills, which once made this an ideal pass at which to cut off northern invaders, add undeniable beauty and personality to the undulating, winding path of the Great Wall. The wall itself lives and breathes history: in the lookout towers, archer’s windows, and signal fire platforms.

This trip also includes introductions to jade carving and silk arts, as well as a traditional Chinese lunch (a lesson in Chinese cuisine, if you so fancy it!)
