Description

Muztagh Ata, with a height of 7,564m (24,816ft), translates from Uygur as the "Father of Ice Mountains." The mountain is located on the eastern Pamir Plateau in Xinjiang. Known for its ice-capped peaks and large base, the mountain looms four kilometers (2.5 miles) tall over Subashi Valley and the deep blue Karakul Lake. This adventure trek starts at Karakul Lake where visitors will have the opportunity to interact with the locals, with an overnight stay in a traditional Kyrgyz yurt. Begin your trek on day two on camel back to Idare Village, a small Kyrgyz settlement comprised of 25 to 30 stone houses. Trek to Qaltumak the next day, a summer feeding area for nomads and their animals, including yaks, camels, and donkeys. Except for four months during the summer, the nomads live in lower altitudes as freezing temperatures overrun Qaltumak at such high altitudes. The tour ends in the small community of Tashkorgan, an extremely isolated area off the old Silk Road that was not accessible until the rebuilding of the Karakoram highway in 1987. As a result, the local community still leads a very traditional way of life with one road leading to Kashgar.
