Description

Explore the legendary Silk Road as it connects China to Western Asia via Kashgar and Turpan. The tour starts with a drive to Turpan, a city in Xinjiang. The area is the lowest point in China and the second lowest on Earth at 154m (505ft) below sea level. Due to its hot and arid climate (up to 40C/105F), its inhabitants have developed karez, an underground irrigation system. The tour stops by Flaming Mountain, the hottest place in China. Turpan is also famous for its vineyards which are responsible for producing the region’s most sought after exports, grapes and honeydew. Continue southwest of Xinjiang to find Kashgar. Located at the extreme west of China, Kashgar is an important junction connecting two branches of the old Silk Road that loop around the Taklamakan Desert. The city is closer to Moscow, Delhi, and Kabul than it is to Beijing. With a history of over 2,000 years, Kashgar still stands as an important trading center today. The local population boasts distinctive Uygur and Tajik culture. While in Kashgar, you'll interact with the locals, explore the largest bazaar in Asia, visit China’s largest mosque, and enjoy a picnic by Karakul Lake.
