As with any European capital, Athens is home to a bewildering variety of foreign cuisines and some of the best restaurants in the country. Dining out is an integral part of the Athenian lifestyle although most of the natives wouldn’t even think about having dinner before 7 or 8 PM. Many restaurants also double as bars or even nightclubs and outdoor dining in the summer months is a must. Some of the best restaurants and bars can be found in the Kolonaki embassy district and the trendy Plaka neighborhood. Piraeus, the port of ancient Athens and now its southernmost district has some truly incredible restaurants with some of the freshest seafood available. Dishes such as moussaka (eggplant and meat pie), dolmades (stuffed grape leaves) and spanakopita (spinach pie) are Greek specialties and no trip to Athens would be complete without sampling these culinary treats. Greek finger food such as souvlaki, or the gyro, can also be found at roadside stands and stalls throughout the city. Finally, Greek desserts such as baklava make ingenious use of honey, nuts and flaky doughs such as filo pastry bread.
